The memorandum signed between the US and Iran did not include Israeli demands to support pro-Iranian forces and reduce the number of ballistic missiles, so the agreement has become a strategic disaster for Israel, the Financial Times (FT) reported Monday.
It is difficult to overestimate how big a strategic disaster this is for Israel. Compared with the pre-war period, the picture is certainly worse today. Israel is no longer guided by the same steps with the US as it used to be, a former Israeli official told the FT.
The interim deal signed by US President Donald Trump with Tehran has caused discontent in Israel, in response to which US Vice President JD Vance called on Israelis to “wake up and smell the reality.”
Former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro said that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have overestimated their capabilities and missed out on strategic advantages. Iran, in turn, despite the losses suffered in the conflict, believes that it has strengthened its position.
At the same time, according to the FT, Washington is seeking to establish a ceasefire in Lebanon, which has raised a wave of protests in Israel. Israeli political consultant Nadav Strauchler said that the agreement with Iran has dealt a serious blow to Netanyahu ahead of the elections in October.
